Service mixed with leadership

September 26, 2012

I remember when we took some class time talking about what makes a service and how it is affected by leadership.  I sometimes think about how we define service. So I found this article on a blog about what service is. The title of the article is The difference between “Service” and “Serve Us!”. It is a short article, but it has some good stuff. The first topic he talks about is that the person needs to be a good listener. The second part he talks about is that they have to out others first. The last thing is that the person needs to be a responsible steward. What do you think about this article? Do you think that they portrayed what service really is?

Leadership…What’s That?

September 26, 2012

sooooo yeah…since this is a leadership LLC, I figured I’d write my first blog post about what I define as leadership. Not to mention, I couldn’t think of anything else to blog about…haha. I think leadership has many definitions. I think everyone has the potential to become a leader in some way. Some people are born with natural leadership qualities while others may have to work on developing their leadership skills. Because leadership can mean so many different things to different people, I don’t think it’s possible to have a concrete definition for exactly what leadership is. According to Wikipedia (I know it’s not all that credible, but I still love it), leadership is defined as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task“. I think that is a WONDERFUL definition of leadership. It covers a lot of areas of the topic.

Lets talk about Leadership….

Leadership is about breaking things!

Hey guys, This is my first blog on the page hopefully I post it right. I’m not really a pro at the social media sites and stuff. But anyways. I was looking around the net to figure out what im to blog about and i found this article. I truly believe that being leadership is about breaking barriers that stop a community from advancing. As leader I feel that we get lazy and we kinda go into autopilot and say we did this last year so lets just do it this year. Instead of being taking the extra time and saying “yea did that last year…lets take it to a whole nother level”.  A great metaphor for this is when a person goes to goes to the same restaurant everyday.

The Mason Student as Voter

September 25, 2012

As I gather my thoughts for my first CLCE blog post, it is an election year.  As a Washingtonian and an educator focused on fostering civic engagement and leadership for social change, I can’t help but have the political engagement aspects of community engagement on the brain right now.

It’s also the beginning of a new school year.  There is some freshness in the air and many college educators are thinking about the subtle changes we see in each new student body as historical and social contexts continue to shape each generation.  (I was reminded this year on Sept 11th that our current Freshmen were about 7 years old that fateful day).  So I’m wondering – what  are today’s college student voters thinking about as they head into the last 5-6 weeks of campaigning?

“…where most earn less than $2 a day.”

September 25, 2012

Washington Post link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/in-the-land-of-blackberry-babes-research-in-motion-hopes-to-grow-nigeria-mobile-phone-sales/2012/09/25/bae96e40-072b-11e2-9eea-333857f6a7bd_story.html

Money and Nigeria

Although the link that I posted primarily talks about how BlackBerries have become a symbol of status in Nigeria, I wanted to focus on one fact that stood out to me: “…where most earn less than $2 a day.” The equivalent to $2 dollars is 200 naira. 200 naira today in Nigeria could buy you a candy bar and nothing more.

Somehow reading the rest of the article about RIM and business did not seem half as troubling as this did.
