Maybe The Nerds Have it Right

By Lori Lawson

This week I am about to combine the two popular themes found in my posts – nerdy enthusiasm and Feminism. I am hoping that some of you have seen the television series Battlestar Galactica. Just this past weekend, I was exposed to the wonderful world of space warfare the is this show. Even if you haven’t seen it, however, I think you will still get my message.

After just a few of watching, I couldn’t help but to realize how prominent women are in the series. Even though the show is in the magical land of science and nerdiness, women help very powerful roles without anyone questioning them. The show features a female president, strong female antagonists, and an amazing fighter pilot learning how to become  a leader in the fleet.

Too often in popular culture I feel that women are portrayed for their sexuality – because the ads look better with them in it. Seeing women, who yes, have a certain hint of sexuality that are instead praised for their heroic and intellectual contributions to the community, was absolutely refreshing. What made this is experience even better was the fact that it is based around a scientific community, which off the TV screen is often criticized for excluding women.

I think that seeing more shifts like this one in the portrayal of women in popular culture is a great way to change views on the role of women. Think about how often a show fanatic aspires to be like a character, and imagine young women to have Starbuck the amazing fighter pilot and hero to look up to instead of a show where the female leads stick to traditional gender roles. While it may just be a little step that still needs the backing of formal education of the masses, I can say with confidence that I think these sorts of changes are key in changing public opinion on a widespread scale in a subtle way.

What are some shows or movies you think do a good job of portraying women fairly? Some that do not? Let me know in the comments!

I recently been watching the show “New Girl” about a girl named Jess who lives in an apartment with three other guys. I like the fact that her situation challenges some prejudiced and over-sexualized ideas that people have on separating the sexes when it comes to living arrangements. Just consider some colleges that refuse to allow co-ed floors or even co-ed buildings! Jess does not get romantically involved with her roommates, and instead challenges them in witty banter and stands up for herself. In turn, her three roommates are very accepting and supportive of her, and at times truly treat her like “one of the guys”. Jess maintains a feminine demeanor, yes, but she is also unafraid to step outside of the box of women’s norms.

I like how you noticed this transition from a normally male dominated role to now women being introduced too. I never really took the time to notice that when I watch TV or surf the web. But I do however notice that women are usually added to shows and commercials for some sort of sex appeal; and I feel that is degrading in someways. I like the fact that women are becoming more and more immersed into the so called “guys-only world” and I think it does have a positive impact on young girls that happen to watch these TV shows. Like you said, you know it’s starting small but sometimes just a push in the right direction is all that is needed to start a chain reaction.

The movie Catwoman starring Halle Berry portrays women as vindictive and cunning and manipulative. Almost all movies about or containing female superheroes show the women in sexy attire that use manipulation/ espionage as their primary attack, but are also very strong willed and violent at times. Black Widow from The Avengers is no one to just mess around with.

What you said hold so much truth! Women deserved to be seen and recognized for their intellect and not just their sexuality. In fact, I personally believe that women are so strong and their ability to conquer fears and play masculine roles makes women more appealing. If you think about it, reflect on all the single mothers who had to play the Mom/Dad roles. I think a lot of times, women in a positive light are neglected. Thanks for this post!
